Sockcamp

Sockcamp covers no-holds-barred elementary arithmetic through early prep for pre-algebra, with side trips into rudiments of geometry, patterns, per cents and various applications. A perfect course for today's calculator-hampered student who badly needs to learn how to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and the like.

Bootcamp

Bootcamp deals with advanced arithmetic with heavy emphasis on all the nuances of fractions and mixed fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative numbers, exponents (including negative and fractional), roots, absolute value, scientific notation, averages, ratio, scale, non-decimal bases, and all manner of combinations of the above. All of this is meticulously sequenced and connected, with all material presented in down-to-earth language before the relevant symbolic approach is introduced.

Deployment

Deployment rigorously covers the full gamut of a traditional elementary algebra course (including a wide range of concepts nowadays relegated to more "advanced" courses), embracing the five fundamental mathematical functions of simplification, solution, modeling, transformation, and proof.

Topics range from operations on variables through evaluation through substitution through solution of equations of a great variety of degrees, solving systems of equations, various graphing applications, polynomials (including all basic operations on them), more complicated expressions, completing the square, the quadratic formula, complex operations on algebraic fractions, complex fractions, variation, parabolas, and much, much more.

Plus a huge unit at the end that includes applications that fine tune the student's ability to discern which algebraic approach fits a given situation, as well as standarized test-type problems.

SuperPhonics

The twin goals of SuperPhonics and its Parents' Handbook:

1. To provide a background second to none in standard American English phonics

This, we hope, is accomplished succinctly via the material in much of the Parents' Handbook. It is likewise presented - in greater detail - in the voluminous lettered sections that comprise the majority of this text (look for the "standard" designation for the given set of entries there).

2. To ensure that the student, at least in some sense, "sounds out" even the most bizarre words (among the approximate ½ of the language that does not obey its standard phonics rules)

We thereby seek to circumvent the horrific (but voguish) "sight words" (rote memorization) or "context clues" (guessing) approaches that are precisely "why Johnnie can't read." This, we trust (and experience verifies) is achieved via techniques outlined elsewhere in that Handbook. Such a process pertains to determining the given "offending" letter/letters and the associated "oddball" pronunciation, followed by an instant "drill" (from the lettered sections) consisting of the reading of (generally) several other words that "disobey" the same rule in the same way (thus reinforcing the new "sub-rule").

Required is a teacher/tutor/parent who (a) already reads reasonably well, and (b) has the patience and perseverance to familiarize him or herself with the layout and logic of these sections. Also: a decent dictionary with a well understood pronunciation key at least analogous to ours (a decent dictionary will have such a key). In the case of unfamiliar words, such a dictionary will serve to point one to the proper set of entries in these seemingly daunting sections.
