Charles
Lewis is a veteran of well over two decades teaching in institutions
ranging from universities to accelerated private schools "at
risk" government schools. He eventually chaired the math
department at one highly regarded charter school and was head
of school at another.
From the onset of his career, he was appalled at the
quality of textbooks compared to that of those from which
he had learned. Arithmetic was now just an afterthought.
Kids learned only a tiny percentage of what previous generations
were taught, then were plunged into "higher" level topics
like algebra, geometry, probability...
Trouble was, without the mastery of arithmetic, these "higher level" subjects
were meaningless. First, they had to be watered down accordingly,
and, second, what little that could be presented was not being
understood.
Further, he noted that pupils' math reasoning was totally disconnected from the
common sense verbal-oriented thought processes that governed their everyday actions.
Because of this disconnect, they constantly made logical errors in their math
thinking that were analogous to mistakes they would never make in the verbal/common
sense area.
Lewis began a multi-year process of developing the means
to establish in students' minds a multitude of connections
between the confusing symbolism of math and the mundane
activities they do instinctively. The result, "analomonics" (a
combination of analogy and mnemonics - calling to mind complex proccesses by
associating them with familiar ones), is the crux of his "troop trilogy" of
math texts, a down-to-earth verbal approach to arithmetic and algebra
that has achieved stunning results across the demographic board,
in terms of both problem working and deep comprehension.
Lewis is the author of well over 200 copyrighted works, has written extensively
for websites such as EdWatch.org,, freedomfoundation.us, globalpolitician.com,
and others, as is currently National Outreach Director for Christian Exodus.
